Her parents had set up their careers and then decided at the last possible moment to have children because that was what they were "supposed" to do. They provided Lanie with the best nannies and best things money could buy, but were both very focused on their careers and were emotionally distant and remote at best. Lanie decided the best way to get her parents affection was to be the model child and she was. Polite, well mannered and she excelled in school. So much so that her parents were more than willing to overlook the subtle yet increasing signs that something was wrong. It wasn't until she was expelled from a very exclusive girl's boarding school because she was caught spanking her roommate with a pledge paddle that Lanie's sadism came to light. Her parents acted swiftly to reduce their embarrassment by sending her to therapy and then away to live with her aunt until she was "dealt with". This was actually the best thing they could have done. He was right and Lanie went to work as a profiler and interrogator for Homeland Security. Lanie had recently been transferred to Tampa on assignment to Guantanamo. She turned her brilliant mine toward capturing the D'Angeline throne through a series of complex manipulations. During this, she met the anguisette, Phedre. Phedre was working for her mentor Anafiel to protect the D'Angeline throne. Using Phedre and her bodyguard Joceline, Melisande attempted a coup, but was caught. The night before she was to be put to death, she managed to escape. Melisande runs into Phedre again as the wife of Benedicte de la Courcel, Great Uncle to the Queen. With him, she gave birth a a son, Imriel de la Courcel who was third in line for the throne. When her son is kidnapped, Melisande makes a deal with Phedre, in return for the rescue of her son, Melisande will tell Phedre the location of the Dan, a tribe that has information Phedre wants.
